What's wrong with Ademola Lookman at Atlético de Madrid?
Nacho Donado explains Ademola Lookman's current form and the areas where the Nigerian forward needs to improve
Nacho Donado analyses why Lookman has yet to get going at Atlético.
Asked how to get Lookman back to his best, Blanca Sánchez points to confidence while Nacho Donado points to style: the Nigerian cannot beat his man one-on-one from a standing start, and Atleti are increasingly dominating possession.
A follower of 'El Club Uría' asked the panel what it would take to get the best version of Ademola Lookman back. Pascual Ruiz is clear: keep giving him a prominent role and minutes. Blanca compares the situation to Sorloth's last season: it is something very personal, and Simeone and the club can help, but in the end it is down to the player, as it was for Alejandro Baena with the World Cup.
Nacho Donado takes a different view. For him, Atleti do not play in a way that suits Lookman. He said as much before the move went through, when the whole fanbase wanted him signed: he is a player who performs far better on the counter, in a fast, direct side, and Atlético de Madrid are increasingly keeping the ball. He insists Lookman cannot beat his man one-on-one from a standing start, despite those who saw him as a pure dribbler.
He adds one nuance: rather than Matteo Ruggeri, as many people think, he believes Lookman misses Griezmann, the player who combined best with him.
