Pepe Brasín: 'García and De la Morena wouldn't get a pass today'
The El Club Uría pundit takes aim at the giants of Spanish sports radio
The panel debates José María García's legacy in radio
A debate on the great names of Spanish sports radio. One pundit admits he was a fan of García, but says that, looking back, he and De la Morena did intolerable things. Rubén Uría would ask García just one question, about Jesús Gil.
The conversation turns to José María García. Pepe Brasín, one of the show's pundits, admits he was an 'incredibly big fan' in the 1980s and 1990s, but says that, seen in hindsight, neither García nor José Ramón de la Morena "would get a pass". He acknowledges that they are absolute legends and geniuses who had the whole country hanging on their every word, but believes they did things that were intolerable by any standard of journalistic practice, driven by their own interests. He also criticises García "for boasting that he had information that would have finished off Spanish sport and never releasing it."
Rubén Uría, who describes himself as a 'butanólogo', an expert on García, nicknamed 'Butanito', says he would ask García only one question: why he allowed what Jesús Gil did to Atleti and never exposed it. Everything else, he says, is admiration. For Uría, García was the number one in sports journalism, well ahead of whoever came second.
Don Eduardo, another pundit, warns of the danger of judging the past through today's eyes, and Uría points out that everyone comes off badly when you dig through the archives. But nobody manages to win Pepe Brasín over: "It wasn't a war, it was sports journalism."
