Manolo relives his Man United stunner: a one-two with Schmeichel
The third goal of a Cup Winners' Cup night at the Calderón, told by the man who scored it
Manolo Sánchez Delgado recounts, over the phone, his goal against Manchester United in the Cup Winners' Cup.
Manuel Sánchez Delgado, better known as Manolo, looks back on the 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Cup Winners' Cup: the minutes of suffering, Futre's second goal and his own shot, parried by Schmeichel, that ended with him on his knees on the pitch.
Rubén Uría was able to interview Manuel Sánchez Delgado, known as Manolo. The former Atlético striker, who won the Pichichi as LaLiga's top scorer in the nineties, looked back on the night Atlético de Madrid beat Manchester United 3-0 in the 1991-92 Cup Winners' Cup. Manolo says the scoreline is misleading: it was a very difficult game.
As he tells it, Atleti went ahead through Futre around the half-hour mark, but United then piled on the pressure, even hitting the post, and the last 15 or 20 minutes were among the hardest he has ever suffered on a football pitch. The opposition were like a whirlwind, and everyone had to roll up their sleeves and run. The team held on with faith, concentration and defensive organisation until Futre's genius surfaced once more to make it 2-0.
The third came from another counter-attack. Futre drew three or four defenders out on the right, Manolo found space on the edge of the box and shot with his left foot. Schmeichel parried and the ball fell back to him: "it looks like I play a one-two with the goalkeeper". At the second attempt he hit it low and knew it was a goal.
Manolo recalls that this time he could not celebrate the way he usually did, running towards the stands with his arms spread wide. He stayed on his knees on the ground and his teammates piled on top of him. "That third goal was pure madness."
