Johnny Cardoso gave up a World Cup to succeed at Atlético
He had surgery and missed the tournament with his national team after an injury-plagued year
Rubén Uría praises Cardoso's sacrifice after hearing his words in the mixed zone
After hearing the midfielder dedicate the win to Koke, Rubén Uría explains why he is so pleased for Cardoso: after an annus horribilis, he chose to have surgery and sacrifice the World Cup so he could be fit for Atlético.
Rubén Uría picks up on Johnny Cardoso's words in the mixed zone, where the midfielder said he hoped God would comfort Koke and his family, and describes them as truly lovely.
From there, he explains why he is so pleased for the American midfielder. Cardoso, he recalls, went through an annus horribilis at Atlético de Madrid, with injuries, setbacks and plenty of problems. But what he values most is a personal decision: Cardoso made a sacrifice, had surgery and gave up the chance to play at a World Cup with his country so he could be fit and play for Atlético de Madrid.
For Rubén, that is a hugely significant gesture from the player, which is why he is especially happy that things are now going well for him.
