Grief at the death of CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel
The CD Tenerife striker died following a collision with the Andorra goalkeeper
A downcast Rubén Uría talks about the death of Jesús de Miguel at the start of the live stream
Rubén Uría opens the Champions League preview with the news that has shaken the football world: the death of Jesús de Miguel. A message of condolence, followed by an uncomfortable reflection on why, even so, people carry on talking about football.
The live stream begins far from Atlético vs Bayern. Rubén Uría confirms that Jesús de Miguel, a CD Tenerife player, has died following the collision with the Andorra goalkeeper that had already been discussed on the show with Borja Aranda a few days earlier. He recalls that the player spent several minutes in cardiac arrest and that the worst fears were confirmed that morning.
Uría makes no secret of the fact that he does not know what to say: "That's how little we are. That's how hard and cruel life can sometimes be." You go during a football match, he sums up, and there are no words. He sends his love to the family, to those close to the player, to the Tenerife supporters and to everyone at CD Tenerife, and describes it as a day of mourning for the whole of football.
He then gets ahead of the criticism he knows will come: some will ask why football is being discussed that day, or why matches are being played at all. Rubén says he understands every sensitivity, but admits that, however cold or flippant it may sound, life goes on. He tells it as he experienced it: a friend broke the news to him that morning and he could not believe it.
