Cuti Romero names his heir to Messi's Argentina No. 10 shirt
The Atleti centre-back would hand it to Julián Álvarez for his humility and good-guy character
Cuti Romero explains in the interview why he sees Julián Álvarez wearing Argentina's No. 10
In an interview with the Edul family, Cuti Romero jokes about hanging Messi's No. 10 on a mural at the AFA, Argentina's football association, so that nobody has to carry it. But if he has to choose an heir, his mind is made up: Julián Álvarez.
On 'El Club Uría', Rubén revisits a clip from the interview Cuti Romero gave on the 'Los Edul' channel. The question is inevitable in Argentina: just as the No. 10 passed from Maradona to Messi, someone will now have to inherit it, even if it is an enormous responsibility and even if every kid dreams of wearing it.
The centre-back first answers with humour. He would retire the shirt and give it a mural at the AFA so that no player has to carry that weight. He quickly admits that cannot be done and, forced to choose, points to Julián Álvarez.
Asked why, Cuti does not talk only about football: he sees in Julián a humble, family-oriented man and a good guy, and he acknowledges his footballing qualities. He accepts that the national team has plenty of important players, but insists that Julián's qualities are the ones that matter when it comes to wearing that number.
Rubén Uría then sums up the interview: Cuti wants to win trophies with Atlético de Madrid and would give Argentina's No. 10 to Julián.
