Atlético de Madrid finally firing away from home
Jorge San Cristóbal points to San Mamés as an example and praises a centre-back who attacks
Jorge San Cristóbal compares Atleti's football with that of previous seasons
Rubén Uría believes this year's Atleti go out to win at any ground, whereas before they went out to see what would happen. Jorge San Cristóbal agrees: possession used to be flat, but now there is an approach that gives fans reason for hope.
Rubén Uría admits that if the match had ended in a draw, everyone would be wearing long faces, but he insists that Atlético's approach away from home bears no resemblance to that of previous seasons. He now sees a dominant side, set on going out to win anywhere, whereas in other years the plan was simply to go and see what would happen.
Jorge San Cristóbal agrees. He recalls that in the past, even when trailing, the team had the ball but did nothing useful with it: flat, sideways football, minutes ticking by without anything happening. He cites the painful defeat in Bilbao as an example, with a very good first half before conceding two goals in two minutes: even that day, there was something that gave reason to be excited about Simeone's idea.
In Vitoria, moreover, that approach was backed up by a win thanks to an outstanding Kuti Romero. San Cristóbal likes finally having a centre-back who attacks, who plays as a striker and scores goals, and he sees it as a sign of leadership, courage and personality in carrying the team on his back. Uría signs off without getting carried away and heading to the Neptuno fountain, where Atlético celebrate their titles: there is a long way to go in the season, but he likes what he sees.
