Who owns Atlético de Madrid? The club's shareholding explained
Rubén Uría points out that a private equity fund invests in order to sell on at a higher price
Rubén Uría explains in the studio that Apollo will bring more famous faces to Atlético
Following Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's arrival as an investor, Rubén Uría runs through Atlético's ownership structure, with Apollo holding 55%, and warns that more famous faces are on the way, as well as reminding viewers what a fund's ultimate goal is.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's arrival as an investor in Atlético de Madrid has prompted Rubén Uría to set out clearly who is in charge at the club. Apollo Sports Capital, the US private equity fund, has become the majority shareholder with 55% of the shares. The second-largest shareholder is Quantum, with 25%. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín retains around 10%, Enrique Cerezo roughly 5%, Ares another 5% and minority shareholders around 1 to 1.5%.
On the NBA star's deal, Uría notes that the amount invested has not been made public and that they are trying to find it out, but he sees it as further evidence of Atlético's expansion, this time involving a hugely recognisable figure in sport.
His feeling is that Apollo will bring in more new faces, more well-known names, perhaps from elite North American sport, and that the number of investors will grow considerably as the 30 June 2027 horizon approaches and the Ciudad del Deporte sports complex is completed.
He signs off with a warning: never forget what Apollo is. It is a private equity fund, and like any fund it wants to invest, optimise, generate returns and, in a few years' time, sell on for more money to make even more. That, he sums up, is what investment funds are.
