VAR's real scandal: the TV director and the 'invisible' incidents
From the Copa del Rey final penalty to the derby incidents that are never replayed
Rubén Uría takes aim at how television covers controversial incidents
Rubén Uría highlights what angers supporters most, inconsistent refereeing, and points to a culprit nobody talks about: what television chooses to show.
Rubén Uría argues that what bothers any supporter most is seeing the same incident given one way at one ground and the opposite way at another. He offers an Atlético example: the penalty in the Copa del Rey final in which the goalkeeper punches clear and strikes with part of his fist, a decision that, in his view, has never been given again.
A panellist points out that exactly the opposite happened the following matchday in a Rayo-Real Sociedad game. Uría replies that nothing came of it because incidents only get publicity when they affect Real Madrid and, to a slightly lesser extent, Barcelona.
And that is where his central argument comes in: the real perversion is the television coverage. Only the controversial incidents that are shown actually exist. He cites the derby, where there was talk of three decisions that went against Real Madrid but not of another three against Atleti. "Either we see them all or we see none of them."
