Simeone in tears as Barrios goal derails Koke tribute plan
The No. 6 shirt was ready, but the emotion of the opening minute swept everything away
Alberto Carballo explains how Koke's shirt ended up in Llorente's hands
Rubén Uría picks out the image of the night: Simeone in tears at 1-0. Nacho Donado and Alberto Carballo explain the plan for Koke's shirt and the build-up of tifo, anthem and minute's silence.
Rubén Uría predicts that one image will do the rounds among Atlético fans: Simeone's reaction to the first goal, scored after 50 seconds. The coach was literally in tears. Jorge San Cristóbal recalls that he made the gesture of Koke's No. 6.
Nacho Donado reveals that a shirt bearing the captain's No. 6 had been prepared to be held up, but amid the emotion of the opening minute Barrios ran straight to the corner flag and nobody remembered. For Nacho, perhaps it was all the more beautiful that way, with the plan going out of the window. Rubén points out that the shirt did eventually appear at 2-0.
Alberto Carballo fills in the rest of the scene: it was Llorente, not Lookman, who showed it, because someone from the coaching staff noticed and rushed over to tell him, as the players celebrating were at the other end of the pitch. He also explains why he was not surprised that Simeone was overcome: it came after a stadium-wide tifo, the anthem sung a cappella and a very respectful minute's silence. After that kind of build-up, a goal after 40 seconds was bound to be emotional.
