Simeone chases record 345th LaLiga win against Barcelona

Victory over Barcelona would make it a treble celebration for Simeone: an eighth straight win, top spot in LaLiga overnight and his 345th triumph as a coach in the history of the competition.

Diego Pablo Simeone is a record-shattering machine at Atlético de Madrid and in the history of LaLiga. Last weekend, Simeone drew level with Luis Aragonés as the coach with the most wins in LaLiga history, on 344. The difference is that Simeone matched 'the Wise Man' in 192 fewer games than Luis needed. Those were different times. And a different Atleti.

On Sunday, Simeone will have a golden opportunity to snatch top spot in the Spanish top flight. If Atleti beat FC Barcelona at home, they will go into the international break as LaLiga leaders, and Simeone will also earn an 'extra' prize: breaking Luis's record to stand alone as the only coach in LaLiga history to reach 345 league wins.

Simeone and Luis, forever

At Atleti, Simeone had already surpassed Luis Aragonés's records. The Argentinian has racked up 479 wins in 813 competitive matches, compared with the 308 the Madrid-born coach earned in 612 games.

Simeone has also won eight trophies in charge of Atleti, two more than the six claimed by Luis. Either way, beyond the numbers and the different eras each worked in, both are the great legends of the Atlético dugout... and of the history of LaLiga as a whole.
