Julián Álvarez apologises to Atlético fans over World Cup remarks
The striker admits his words during the World Cup were wrong in both manner and timing
Julián Álvarez speaks to television after the match against Deportivo
After scoring against Deportivo, Julián Álvarez apologised on television for what he said during the World Cup. Rubén Uría welcomed the fact that he remembered the fans who backed him when the goals dried up.
It was the story of the night. Speaking to the rights-holding broadcaster after scoring at the Metropolitano for the second game in a row, Julián Álvarez asked to say something before answering any questions.
In an interview with Movistar, Julián said: "I wanted to apologise to our fans for what I said during the World Cup. It was a mistake. The manner and the timing. Above all because I understand why people were angry. I'd have been angry too if I were a fan. Especially given how they've stood by me. They were very generous and I really value that. I also want to thank the team, because they supported me throughout this time."
He added: "I'm feeling good. I'm grateful to all my teammates because they've backed me. I'm working to improve. I've felt better in the last few games, both physically and on the ball. Helping the team and giving my best." Julián also thanked his teammates for their support and said it was now time to focus on working hard and improving his performances.
On the show, Rubén Uría praised the tone and, above all, the words chosen. He recalled that he had already said one of the things Julián needed to do was remember the fans who, when he wasn't scoring, supported him, didn't whistle him, sang his name and applauded him. Julián has finally remembered those people. Better late than never.
