José María Giménez's Atlético de Madrid legacy: 14 seasons
Rubén Uría calls for an extraordinary ovation for 'the commander' on the Día de las Peñas, the club's supporters' groups day
Rubén Uría counts Giménez's seasons at Atleti one by one
Rubén Uría looks back on José María Giménez's career at Atlético and wonders what might have been without so many injuries. His answer: he would most likely be a club legend.
After listening to Giménez on Cadena SER, Rubén Uría takes stock of his time at Atlético de Madrid. The Uruguayan, who returns with Deportivo de la Coruña, still has two years left on his contract with the Atleti, although he has said publicly that he does not see a return as possible.
Uría counts the seasons out loud: fourteen, going back to 2013-14. He has racked up 384 appearances and 14 goals, along with five trophies: two LaLiga titles, the Supercopa de España, the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.
The question he poses is what might have become of his career without so many injuries, and his answer is that he would most likely have been a legend. He adds that some argue that, even with them, Giménez already embodies the charisma and spirit of an Atlético legend. He signs off hoping that, on the Día de las Peñas, the crowd will give him an extraordinary ovation.
