Interview: the new voice of Multifútbol's Champions and Europa League
Albert Fernández, the new voice of Multifútbol, explains how you commentate without knowing what's coming
The voice of Multifútbol explains on El Club Uría the toll of commentating on several matches at once
The commentator who took over from Jaume Naveira explains the challenge of Thursday-night Multifútbol, the multi-match whip-around broadcast: you don't know which ground you'll cut to, who's attacking, or whether it's a goal, a penalty or a red card. Four hours of total concentration that leave you utterly mentally drained.
Rubén Uría reminds his guest of what Jaume Naveira and Fermín Suárez once said: that they often don't know which passage of play they are about to commentate on. As the new voice of Multifútbol, the whip-around broadcast that jumps between several matches at once, he confirms it in detail.
You know nothing, he explains. You see one ground, then another, then another, and you don't know whether it's going to be a goal, a penalty or a red card; you don't know which team is attacking or whether the player on screen came on twenty minutes ago because of an injury. You have to take it all in and call it instantly.
The toughest part, he says, is Thursdays with the Europa League and the Conference League: two two-hour shifts almost back to back. You get through it, he says, but it demands such fierce concentration and so little breathing space that by the end your brain isn't working properly. "I promise you." Then there are a few days to recover, and he concludes with humour that in this life you have to recover from everything.
