Atlético's tactical switch: moving Baena inside turned the game
Shifting Baena from the flank to the centre gave Atlético the extra man and rattled Stuttgart
Rubén Uría explains Baena's tactical shift in the second half
Rubén Uría breaks down the key tactical change at half-time: beyond Lookman's introduction, Simeone moved Baena into midfield, and with numerical superiority in the middle Atlético stopped being pressed and took control of the game.
After Alberto Carballo praised the half-time changes, Rubén Uría pinpoints where the key really lay. When Atlético come back out and Simeone replaces Jonathan David with Lookman, that is not the real change, he explains; it is the instruction to Baena to leave the flank and move into the middle.
With that superiority in central areas, Stuttgart could no longer press: Atlético kept passing and passing, frustrating their opponents, and the Germans grew wary of stepping in and dropped back into their own half. From then on, Rubén concludes, Atlético were in tactical control of the game until the sending-off.
