Atlético's last Champions League tie with United: that Lodi stunner
2021-22 last 16: 1-1 at the Metropolitano and victory at Old Trafford
Nacho Donado looks back, from the Metropolitano, at the 2022 tie between Atlético and United
Nacho Donado looks back at the last European meeting between Atlético and Manchester United, the 2022 tie. He recalls Simeone's talk with Griezmann as the pair sat on the ball, and Renan Lodi's goal at Old Trafford.
Ahead of Atlético de Madrid v Manchester United, Rubén Uría takes a trip down memory lane: as a youngster he saw the Cup Winners' Cup tie in which, with Futre and Manolo, Atleti put three goals past United. He also recalls that the most recent meeting ended well for the Madrid side, thanks to that Lodi goal at Old Trafford.
Nacho Donado fills in the details. It was in the last 16 of the 2021-22 season, the one after Atlético's LaLiga title. The first leg finished 1-1 at the Metropolitano, with João Félix scoring and Anthony Elanga equalising. The second leg will be remembered for Renan Lodi's goal, scored in that sky-blue kit.
Donado dwells on the build-up to that match. Griezmann was not fully fit, and Simeone made a special request of him: the image of the Atlético coach sitting with him on top of the ball, explaining how important he was for that night, has become famous. Atleti won and went through to the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out by Manchester City.
The look back ends with the current Champions League format, in which the league phase is decided by one-off matches. After losing at Anfield, Atleti need points.
